Trolling on social media

Updated: May 6, 2021

Trolling and online bullying is at an all time high, with attacks happening daily on social media. But why is this?

Trolling and online bullying on social media is at an all time high. I carried out a survey asking what they think the issues with social media are and around 90% of the answers were related to online bullying, I also asked if the rules and laws around online bullying should be changed and a lot stricter - 100% of people said there should be stricter laws around online bullying.

Something needs to be done before it’s too late, social media is turning into a place where instead of a place you can go to escape from everyday life, but to a place full of hate and anger.

Scrolling through Facebook comments, even of serious posts a lot of the comments are trolling even from older adults.

Even on TikTok (an app made for teens widely used by children and teenagers all around the world) every viral video gets hate, most videos on the FYP get hate.

I’ve personally seen young children giving and receiving hate, It’s shocking some of the things that are said on social media and the ages of the people saying these things are even more shocking.

It isn’t only the general public who are the front of online bullying but also celebrities are the victims of online bullying on a daily basis. As of February 2020 A new law was suggested and put together to take to parliament - Caroline’s law. This was first put together by Stephanie Davies after the sad death of Caroline Flack after she was the victim of harsh bullying from not only the public but also from many media outlets. The law is to ‘bring in new and stricter laws around safeguarding celebrities and people in the public eye.’ This petition got over 800,000 signatures, so a lot of people do want to see a change with what happens online but clearly there needs to be stricter laws to enforce it. Everybody deserves to feel safe on social media and not be at risk of having hate thrown at them for just trying to have fun.

There’s so many petitions that have been put together to take to parliament. Hopefully we can make a difference and there will be stronger rules brought in.

Anything said online can affect someone so we all need to be really careful as to what we say and how we act online. If you ever see online bullying or something you deem as rude or abusive, make sure to report it, whether that’s a comment or video. Reporting a video is always anonymous to the person who you are reporting so there’s no need to worry or be scared. It’s always good to help get rid of all hate online.

I’m in no doubt that we can make a difference to how people view social media, if we make a change and change how we act
